Man convinces ex-swim coach to compete again
By NILES KRUGER The Monroe Evening News An AP Member Exchange MONROE — Alex Steve helped Don Kroeger get his first taste of competitive swimming way back in the late 1950s. Now, the tables have turned. Kroeger has coaxed his former high school coach back into competition. The two Monroe men recently traveled to Lima, Ohio, to compete in a Senior Olympic event. Kroeger won seven gold medals in the 65-over division. He was able to swim in that division even though he is only 64 because it is based on when your birthday falls, not your actual age. And Steve captured three golds. He could have had as many golds as he wanted since he was the only competitor over the age of 80. The important thing was that he was there to compete at the age of 82. ‘‘I swam competitively in college (1943-46), but this is the first time since then,’’ Steve said. ‘‘Don and I work out together, and he talked me into it. It was fun.
