The regional Science Olympiad Competition held at Alpena Community College ended with a dramatic victory for Alpena High School. After the score wavered back and forth between Elk Rapids and AHS, the final tally ended with a tie, which was broken by the most first-place finishes. Alpena had one more first place awards than Elk Rapids to claim the victory and a trip the the state finals at Michigan State University. Alpena was lead by Lorenzo Salacata who earned first place medals in Anatomy, Disease Detectives, Fossils and Experimental Design. Three other Alpena competitors finished with two first place medals: Alex Doubek won first place medals in Elevated Bridges and Experimental Design, Nathan LaBarge won first place in Dynamic Planet and Physics Lab, and Rachel MacMaster won first place in Experimental Design and Disease Detectives. Nine other Alpena High School students won first place medals. The state Science Olympiad competition is on May 1. The C.O.A.CH.
