The Alpena girls senior all-star softball team fell 8-1 and 29-1 to a hard-hitting West Branch team Tuesday in district final action at the Huron Shore Complex. West Branch opened up a 7-0 lead in game one, and had innings of 12 runs and 13 runs in game two to sweep the best-of-three series. “I was surprised we played as well as we did,” said West Branch coach Jim Lucas. “Alpena played us really tough in the first game.” Alpena head coach Kevan Rogers chalked his team’s performance up to nerves. “Butterflies and errors (were our problems),” said Rogers. Kate Dombrowski pitched a no-hitter through five innings for West Branch in game one, and pitched an inning of relief in game two. She finished with eight strikeouts in six innings worked. “She always pulls through for us,” said Lucas. “She’s our No. 1.” Jessica Harrison, who pitched for Alpena in both games, broke up Dombrowski’s no-hitter in the bottom of the fifth inning with a single that scored Brandi Kaplan.
