Lottery opens for bridge runners

MACKINAW CITY, Mich. (AP) — The Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness, Health and Sports has announced a lottery for people who want to participate in the five-mile Labor Day run across the Mackinac Bridge.

Four-hundred people will be able to join the noncompetitive run across the span connecting Michigan’s Upper and Lower peninsulas.

To qualify, participants must be 18 years old by Sept. 6, 2010, residents of Michigan and capable of running one mile in 12 minutes. They also must have participated in an event endorsed by the Michigan Fitness Foundation.

The lottery for the Mackinac Bridge Labor Day Run will be held in June.
