Local resident is both Besser Museum volunteer and exhibitor

For the last several years, Barb Beem of Alpena has been a prime volunteer at the Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan. Whether she’s leading Saturday workshops for kids, preparing food and decorations for museum receptions or helping to organize major events like Log Cabin Day and Fall Harvest Day, Beem puts a lot of hours into serving the museum. Despite her frequent presence at the facility, museum staff only recently discovered Beem’s many years of experience as an artist. Now the museum is sharing that discovery with the rest of the community by showcasing about 25 of Beem’s paintings on wall space surrounding the museum planetarium. “She’s one of our premier volunteers, and each one of us here, at our own time, found out she was an artist and such a talented artist,” said Museum Director Janet Smoak. “This is a great opportunity to celebrate one of our volunteers.
