Regions history is preserved at area museums and library

May 1, 2008

By Phil Wenzel

Not many people besides Rogers City residents who are over 40 years old would recognize the name “Calcite Screenings.”

It was a newsletter-style magazine that was published by the Michigan Limestone Operations quarry (Calcite) for its employees between 1926 and 1963. They are, in many ways, a portrait of the small Northeast Michigan town and its growth throughout that time period.

They have not been published in years but back issues are available for viewing at the Presque Isle County Historical Museum in Rogers City. The museum tries to preserve the artifacts, like copies of “Screenings,” that symbolize eras in the area’s past.

And it is not the only one — there are numerous museums, libraries and other places in the area that try to keep alive the yesterdays of a sparsely-populated but history-rich region.
