Thursday, fourth, fifth and sixth graders from eight elementary schools gathered at Alpena Community College to compete in the annual Knowledge Bowl. There were eight teams from each grade, five to six students per team and seven competing quiz sessions.

The quiz sessions began at 10 a.m. and continued throughout the day.

The students were faced with some tough questions including: What’s 2/5 of 7/8? Name the province in Canada that means New Scotland, and where will the Winter Olympics be held in 2010?

“The questions covered everything from the basic (curriculum) subjects to current events and community news, sports, music and entertainment,” said Betty Westrope, Alpena Public Schools communications coordinator.

The day closed with an awards ceremony during which the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners received medals and all students recieved certificates of participation.
