Based on the Oscar-winning 1959 movie starring Doris Day and Rock Hudson, "Pillow Talk" makes its Alpena stage premier this week at Thunder Bay Theatre. The show opens Thursday for a two-week run.
The romantic comedy begins with the workaholic interior decorator Jan Morrow (TBT company member Jennifer Carter) flabbergasted by the fellow she shares a telephone party-line with, playboy Brad Allen (TBT company member John Mervini).
Brad is constantly tying up the line to woo an array of women which irritatingly keeps Jan from making business-related calls. Ultimately, Brad decides to make Jan one of his conquests. Knowing, however, how she feels about him, he poses as a gentleman Texan named Rex Stetson to win her.
The plot is complicated by the fact that Brad's best friend, Jonathan Forbes (TBT Artistic Director Mark Butterfuss) is in love with Jan.
"'Pillow Talk' has become a cult classic as have the stars of that original feature film from Universal Pictures," Butterfuss said. "I have always been a fan of the Doris Day/Rock Hudson films, and when I found out that a stage version was available in this classic piece, I thought, what a great idea."
Also appearing in the production are TBT company member Heather Nordenbrock as the maid, Alma. Riconda Lamb, Lisa Rhea and Kaitlyn Tomaszewski all play a variety of roles. Rounding out the cast is Brandon Peterson as Tony Walters and Graham.
"It's a light-hearted period comedy show that should be fun for the family and hopefully gives a new look to the same story that was seen on film and now comes alive in person," Butterfuss said.
Performances are Oct. 22-25 and Oct. 29-Nov. 1 with show times at 7:30 p.m. Thursday to Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. For reservations, call the TBT box office at 354-2267.
