Alpena native Carleen Collins has written and illustrated a new children's book, "Everyone Loves Chocolate."
After traveling to Italy and Japan, Collins and her two children moved back to Alpena for its small town friendly feel. She currently lives downtown and takes advantage of all the different events and social activities offered for the entire family.
An artist, writer and photographer, she likes to give back to the community and delights in photographing community events. Her gallery of photographs can be found online at Alpena News CU.
Collins believes in inspiring and teaching children how to be creative by expressing themselves through music, art and writing. This, in turn, allows them to excel academically and develop socially. It also promotes good health and a positive attitude.
Collins has been motivated by her beliefs as she works toward a bachelor of science degree in elementary education, and also as she continues to volunteer teaching religious education.
"I have always wanted to write a book about my hometown, my children and my favorite holiday Halloween, and I am thrilled I was able to combine my dreams into one story," Collins said.
Her idea evolved from an Alpena Community College children's literature class last semester. She devoted this past summer to drawing and painting with watercolors all of the illustrations in "Everyone Loves Chocolate."
"Everyone Loves Chocolate" is a positive Halloween story that focuses on the relationship between a sister and brother. It incorporates the community of Alpena, including Tendercare Nursing Home and the Fletcher home on State Avenue.
The book also gives an overview of rules, depicts a happy and loving family, includes sharing, deals with real feelings, and features a cheerful and surprise ending.
"Everyone Loves Chocolate" is available for purchase online through Barnes and Noble or Amazon. It can also be ordered through AuthorHouse Publishing Co. online for half the price.
